At least one council is listening to motorcyclists and it’s NOT Westminster

October 29, 2009

Westminster City Council have refused to listen to thousands of motorcyclists who have been protesting at unfair and unjustified parking charges imposed on them over the past 14 months. Conservative Councillor Danny Chalkley has decided to stealth tax bikers for parking in the Central London Borough of Westminster without meaningful justification, other than his desire to fill up the council’s coffers to boost his own political career and push through the Partners in Parking (PiP) scheme, lead by Westminster City Council.

We are, however, reassured to know that there is at least one Council in the United Kingdom that is keen to listen to motorcyclists, and that is Slough Borough Council. Below is an extract taken from the motorcycle parking page of their website:-

“Free motorcycle parking bays have been created in Slough. This is in response to concerns from local motorcycle groups and riders about the lack of suitable parking areas for motorbikes (…) Now motorcyclists visiting the town centre have designated areas to park and can use these spaces free of charge”.

Is this not marvellous? Well done, Slough Borough Council! At least these guys recognise that motorcycles are the solution to reduce road congestion and air pollution, and also offer an affordable and reliable mode of transport to their users.

For Westminster Conservative Councillors, motorcycle usage is a problem, and this is why they are keen to control the number of bikes in their borough by stealth taxing them to park. Westminster City Council is the ONLY local authority in the entire world that taxes motorcyclists for parking…  and that is until the No To Bike Parking Tax campaign takes the council to court for potential breach of EU and Local Government rules on procurement of the Verrus pay by phone parking system and NSL contracts, should the bike parking tax be made permanent by Councillor Danny Chalkley, a decision that should have been made in early August 2009 and that is constantly being delayed. We wonder why…
