If you have an accident, you have to pay the “crash tax”

April 11, 2010

One of our readers based in the United States has sent us details of an unbelievable story involving a crash between a car and a motorcycle, in the state of Illinois.

The motorcyclist was hit by a car from behind in Chicago Height and someone who witnessed the scene called the local emergency services immediately by dialling 911. Shortly afterwards, the emergency services turned up and found no sign of fire, explosion or debris, according to Gary Feldman, the motorcyclist involved in the accident. He said, “from what I saw, they came, they saw, and they left.”

Right, so although there was an accident, which the biker was not at all responsible for and had no major injuries of any kind, Mr Feldman received shortly after the event a bill for US$ 200, while the car driver who had hit him, received a bill for only US$ 100! The bill was related to the emergency services called by the witness.

They stealth tax you, even when your life is in danger and it's not your fault.

What is this? It is simply what American citizens called the “crash tax”. When you have an accident, if the emergency services are called, you receive shortly afterwards a nice bill through the post being precisely the so-called “crash tax”. We are told that this crash tax is law in 41 states that make up the USA, only 9 states have banned it (Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Tennessee).

Poor Mr Feldman! Not only was he not responsible for the accident, had no real injuries and had yet to pay US$ 200 to the emergency services, twice as much as the car driver who caused the accident. Surely, Mr Feldman makes monthly or annual state contributions to get a decent health service.  This is purely a stealth tax, nothing else, that is there to grab yet more money from the public. Needless to say that you are obliged to pay the tax, otherwise the bill goes to a collection agency, and no insurance covers it.

But that’s not it. What has made our blood boil even more is when we found out that Illinois lawmakers are even considering legislation that would allow municipalities to bill up to US $250 per hour for emergency services that are already funded in part by taxes. It’s also being considered in some California towns.

It makes you think twice before calling the emergency services, doesn’t it? There is no better way to discourage people from calling the emergency services, but when a serious accident has taken place, with someone sitting in between life and death, then what do you do?

Each country has its own stealth taxes but we think this one is just totally out of order. Come on guys, just go down the street and protest en masse all over your country! We do it very well in Europe, particularly in France, so why can’t you? Just show the authorities that you don’t want to be treated like cash cows! It’s simple.

Il me semble que l’on attends rien d’autres d’un pays comme les États-Unis oú tout est centré sur fric saissisant. Les ricains, ils ont les mêmes à blâmer.

In the USA it seems to me that everything is geared to money so why be suprised when situations like this arise. The “Septics” have only themselves to blame.
