Motorcyclist ends up in prison for riding over the speed limit

April 13, 2010

A 22 year old motorcyclist was caught last year on the Paris ring road (also known as the “périphérique”) at 190 kms per hour (equivalent to 119 miles per hour) although the speed limit is 80 kms per hour (or 50 miles per hour). That’s more than twice the authorised speed limit on this particular road. The motorcylist was caught by speed cameras and found riding his bike with a broken arm.

We have today been informed that the motorcyclist has been sentenced with one year in prison, his driving licence has been withdrawn, he is liable to a € 7,500 (US$ 10,000 or £6,800) fine and is not allowed to retake his driving test for a minimum of two years from now. His motorbike has also been confiscated.

The young man has been accused of putting other people’s lives at risk and severely breaching the highway code.

UK France bikers believe that this is more than fair enough, although we would have loved to see this young man in prison for slightly longer than just one year. To ride at such a high speed, we wonder what went through his mind.

Do you suppose that the driver of a car would receive a similar punishment for the same offence?
Presuming of course, that the peripherique can be traversed at such speed by anything with more than two wheels…

Fair enough; the guy was riding like a dick, but are the sentences for bikers in France disproportionate to those using other vehicles?
That often seems to be the case in the UK.
