Bikers block entry to Westminster Council for the third week in a row

July 14, 2010

Westminster City Council still doesn’t get it. They still refuse to admit that their motorcycle parking tax is much hated and continue to come up with spin in a desparate attempt to justify this evil attack on motorcyclists. Westminster Councillors are only interested in making money, taking the hard-earned money from members of the public who elected those councillors specifically to serve the public interest. All these councillors want is YOUR money to serve their own interests, not yours. They don’t give a damn about your interests, they’re only interested in their own.

If you look at motorcycle parking in the London borough of Westminster, you will find no difference whatsoever in the parking bays between now that bikers have to pay £1 a day to use them and when the use of the same bays was free of charge. The bays are identical as before, they offer no additional benefits. Westminster Councillors are simply taking YOUR money to serve their own interests because, as a biker, you are getting nothing at all in return for your money that you didn’t get before when parking was free. Motorcycle parking in Westminster is just a complete rip-off.

Every Wednesday, a rather large group of bikers continue to express their anger and disgust at Westminster City Council who still refuse to scrap their motorcycle parking tax. In addition to legally causing enormous traffic jams in the Trafalgar Square area, blocking cars, buses, lorries, coaches etc for hours in the morning and evening, the bikers blocked the entrance doors to Westminster City Council again this morning, forcing all council staff to stand outside the office and wait in the street until the bikers eventually moved away. Council employees were prevented from entering the building by a large number of motorbikes and scooters parked just outside the building, blocking all entrance doors.

We were amused to follow the event this morning just a few days after council Chief Executive, Mike More, sent an email to Warren Djanogly, Chairman of the No To Bike Parking Tax campaign, asking him to stop disrupting the activities carried out by Westminster City Council. Below is an extract of Mr More’s recent email:-

The issue of motorcycle parking is currently being considered by the High Court and we await a decision in due course. I would therefore call on you to refrain from disrupting the council, local residents and businesses, and the general life of the city.

Your continued disruption at City Hall and around the city, and your publicly stated intention of disrupting the work of the council and targeting its members and officers, cannot continue.

At Westminster we have a big job to do in providing services to tens of thousands of residents and businesses every day.

While it’s your right to protest against polices with which you may not agree, as a council we will not be intimidated from taking decisions which we think are in the public interest.

Touchy, isn’t it? Obviously, the bikers don’t give a toss about Mr More’s threats and are determined to continue their actions until Westminster City Council finally scrap their motorcycle parking tax. Let’s not forget that what Mr More calls a decision taken in the public interest consists, among others, of implementing a motorcycle parking tax that the council admits is making an annual loss of £430,000 and that Westminster residents and visitors are required to fund. That’s definitely in the public interest, isn’t it? Oh, and how could we possibly forget how traffic wardens in Westminster are given PCN (Penalty Charge Notice) targets to make sure that enough parking tickets are issued to motorists and motorcyclists every month to bring revenue to the council? The No To Bike Parking Tax campaigners are impatiently waiting for a High Court decision which will be announced on Friday morning (16th July 2010) following a trial last month to challenge the legality of the parking tax. Should the High Court verdict not be in the favour of the bikers, we are told that Westminster City Council and their borough will be severely (but legally) disrupted going forward until the bike parking tax is fully scrapped.

Victory to the bikers, let the people who ride decide!

Strange how access to Westminster City hall is getting harder and inconvenient since they introduced the bike parking tax….
